Abstract

op farming has made the land to become the most coveted resource for
farming and herding. The interaction between these closely related occupations
(farmers and herders) had on different occasions led to violent clashes between
them that resulted in the deaths, wanton destruction of crops, properties, and
killings of livestock. The study was conducted in Goronyo Local Government Area
of Sokoto among settlements that surrounded Goronyo Dam. Qualitative
techniques of data collection were adopted for the study. Ten Focus Group
Discussions (FGD) and five In-depth Interviews (IDI) were conducted with
farmers, herdsmen, and leaders of the farmers and herdsmen in the areas around
Goronyo Dam. Theoretically, this paper has adopted Eco-Violence Theory to
explain the phenomenon studied. The study found that in all the areas visited
Resources Partitioning Model of mutual co-existence was designed by the
farmers and herdsmen which has ensured a peaceful relationship between them
in the areas. This played a significant role in mitigating the outbreak of violence
between them. The paper established that the relationship between them in the
areas is symbiotic with few cases of violence which indicates the viability of the
Resources Partitioning Model.
