Abstract

Purpose: This study aims to explore the significance of job
embeddedness (JE) theory and practices to reducing employee turnover and then
suggest future research directions. It also reviews the systematic development of
JE theory and its relationship with different workplace theories. A comprehensive
content analysis, including a systematic review of articles published between
2008 and 2018, is conducted to understand the extensive role of JE in the
workplace. Within the organizational context of employee turnover intention,
both the academicians and practitioners face the same challenging quest i.e.,
‘what is it that makes employees stay?’ or ‘what makes employees leave?’. In this
regard, multiple claims have been recorded, mainly highlighting the notions that
satisfied employees tend to show commitment towards their job and stay with
the organization. The converse is the scenario with employees who do not have
job satisfaction. However, many studies have identified, subsequently,
organizational commitment is another key element to investigate employee
turnover. Considering all these scenarios, job embeddedness has deepened its
meaning for the explanation structure of the exploration in a similar
phenomenon. Design/methodology/approach: A significant knowledge gap
prevails across the educational domain with regards to the conceptualization of
Job Embeddedness. Accordingly, this study aims at systematically reviewing the
implications of this concept concerning sustainable turnover in the education
sector. This study contributes to the literature by further expanding JE theory and
proposing a comprehensive JE framework that researchers and practitioners can
adopt in future research. Findings: The study serves as a theoretical explanation
of the most complex phenomenon of employee turnover intention within the
framework of their job embeddedness.
